The cold weather is upon is....already. That brings a whole new set of challenges to keeping your home safe and sound. Here are 6 of the easiest tips to get your home ready for the frigid weather.
1. Add draft stoppers to your main outside doors
There may be gaps underneath the door that you can't easily see. There are a few different types of draft guards that you can buy. Head to your hardware store and grab a couple for your front and back doors.
2. Cover your outside faucets
They make covers specifically for your outside faucets. They slip right over and can be adjusted to fit your faucet firmly. This will protect them from freezing and busting.
3. Add outlet insulation
Most homes lack insulation around electrical switches and outlets. Hardware and home improvement stores sell outlet and switch sealer kits. They are easy and inexpensive and can make a huge difference.
4. Add LED daylight bulbs to your kitchen
The kitchen is usually the most popular room in the home. These lights mimic sunlight and help make the room feel brighter on the dreary winter days and nights. Plus they help save money on your electric bill.
5. Clean out your air ducts
Dust and vacuum all of your wall and floor vents, registers, and returns. If they are blocked with dust, it can make your heating system less efficient. If you have rooms that aren't warm enough, consider adding vent deflectors to direct the heat. Or, your may need to call and have a professional cleaning done on your duct work throughout the house.
6. Change your air filter
Make sure that you start the season with a new, clean air filter. Also, consider having a tune up done on your heating system.
