Kitchen safety tips for the upcoming holidays

With Thanksgiving and Christmas fast approaching, we'll all be spending more time in our kitchens. So of course that leads to more kitchen accidents. Here are a few tips to keep yourself and your kitchen safe and healthy.

1. Make sure that your outlets are up to code
Kitchen outlets should be upgraded to GFCI outlets. Also, do a quick check to ensure that the outlets themselves, along with cords on appliances are in good shape.

2. Buy a fire extinguisher
Make sure you have an extinguisher in an easy to reach spot. You should have one on each level of your home, but especially in the kitchen! A good place to store yours would be under the kitchen sink.

3. Know how to prevent kitchen fires
Be safe when cooking, pay attention, and don't leave cooking food unattended. Keep an extra box of baking soda on hand for small grease fires. Be sure to keep any rags, towels, and pot holders away from the oven and cook tops.

4.  Sharpen knives
This is self explanatory, but it's actually dangerous to use dull knives.

5. Clean and disinfect
Make sure you clean your oven before you start all of the holiday cooking. Disinfect your surfaces before and after holiday gatherings. After all, it's cold and flu season!

6. Baby proof
Just because your children may be old enough to know better, there may be grandchildren, cousins, etc, that are younger. Make sure cleaning supplies and alcohol are out of reach. Consider buying a baby gate for steep stairs. Keep pots and pan handles angled toward the back of the stove while cooking.

7. Read up on food prep tips
Make sure you cook your turkey to a safe temperature. Keeps your hands washed before and after any food prep. Make sure you properly store any items that need refrigeration properly to keep them safe. Don't over pack your fridge or freezer. Prevent cross-contamination while prepping your dinners. Disinfect dish rags and sponges.

Tricks for Those Hard to Paint Areas in Your Home

While some DIY projects seem like they should be left for the pros, painting doesn’t have to be one of them. Basic painting seems easy enough, but sometimes we run into those hard-to-paint areas and regret not hiring a professional. Instead of hanging up the towel, try out these tricks for those spots and see if you can finish your project all on your own (and save some money in the process!) Painting Window Trim Painting the wood diving panes and sashes on windows can seem daunting at first. Most people think that lining your windows with painters tape will help, but that is usually just a waste of time. Instead, just paint away! This is the one time it is okay to get a little paint outside of your target area. When paint gets on the glass, just allow it to dry and as soon as it does, scrape it off with a razor blade.
